Behind the scenes of dog ethology

Katalin Mund, science-sociologist observed the functioning of the Department of Ethology at Eötvös Loránd University with cultural anthropoligistic methods. Her book describes in detail the work of the ethologists; how their hypotheses are formulated, tested and how the gained results are interpreted. Also, it tries to find out about the individual and group level strategies that are necessary for a given discipline (i.e. dog ethology) to develop and subsist in Hungary, and about the difficulities researchers have to face. The book does not only reveal secrets about a newly emerging scientific field, but it also shows a possible way of thinking about dogs and their way of thinking, and tells us how to prove scientifically the well understood thing: that the dog is man’s best friend.
